Lucy Maud Montgomery's birthplace is well worth a visit--a reminder of the gentle island home that inspired the creation of stories that have resounded the world over.

Situated in the picturesque village of New London, in Queen's County, PEI, Canada, the historic birthplace of L.M. Montgomery gives fans a glimpse into the forces that shaped the author of the Anne books.

Lucy Maude was born in an upstairs bedroom of this quaint house on November 30th, 1874. Her growing up years were spent on Prince Edward Island, which left an indelible mark on Montgomery's soul.

The Lucy Maud Montgomery Birthplace in New London is known as "Clifton" to fans of the author's novels. Green Gables is just a few short minutes away and Park Corner ("Silver Bush")--the location where Montgomery was married--is close by.

Visitors can view samples of the author's early poetry and letters. Scrapbooks chronicle Montgomery's early years as a student at Prince of Wales College and her career as a teacher and a writer. Montgomery carefully preserved her published clips in these books along with treasured keepsakes.

The L. M. Montgomery Birthplace contains period furniture. You'll see the Franklin stove in the kitchen (the kind Anne used to warm herself) and the organ belonging to Montgomery's relatives. A copy of Island Hymn, written in 1908, is displayed on the organ. Lucy Maud was asked to compose the words for this hymn by the Women's Institute. At the top of the stairs, one can see into the actual bedroom where Montgomery was born.

  • A replica of the author's wedding dress is on display, along with her wedding shoes and the slippers she wore on her honeymoon.
  • A blue willow platter resides in the bookcase, a pattern that was used at the time and mentioned in Anne of Avonlea.

Wonderfull Article. I have visited the House in which L.M.Montgomery was born and raised. I would suggest that anyone who is a fan of her writing or a fan of Canadian history and culture take a trip to see not only her house but also to see Prince Edward Island.
